India announces education development index

Puducherry, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Delhi and Tamil Nadu are the top five states and UTs in terms of education development index (EDI) 1/19/2009 6:20:15 PM

New Delhi: Puducherry, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Delhi and Tamil Nadu are the top five states and union territories (UTs) in terms of education development index (EDI) prepared by National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NUEPA) and the Government of India.

In the primary level education, Puducherry, Delhi, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu and Kerala are the top five states and UTs, whereas Kerala, Lakshadweep, Puducherry, Chandigarh and Delhi are the top five states and UTs in the upper primary level.

The EDI has been computed by the NUEPA and the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (Department of School Education and Literacy) separately for primary and upper primary levels of education and also a composite index for the entire elementary education which is exclusively based on the DISE data for the year 2007-08.

The EDI not only uses state-specific indicators but also brings in many new dimensions of elementary education. It also incorporates key indicators on all aspects of universalisation of elementary education in case of all the states and UTs of the country.

A set of 23 indicators have been used in computing EDI which are re-grouped into the four sub-groups, namely access, infrastructure, teachers and outcome indicators.

The Flash Statistics: Elementary Education in India: Progress towards Universal Elementary Education (UEE) is based on the data received from as many as 1.25 million schools spread over 624 districts across all states and UTs of the country.
