With 11,87,761 teacher posts still vacant across the country, the
Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) will review the
implementation of the Right to Education Act October 10. Union
Minister for Human Resource Development Pallam Raju has convened the
CABE meeting.
As per the District Information System for Education (DISE) 2011-12,
there are about 20 per cent (8.6 lakh) untrained teachers as per the
National Council For Teacher Education (NCTE) norms.
States with large number of untrained teachers are West Bengal (1.97
lakh), Bihar (1.86 lakh), Uttar Pradesh (1.43 lakh), Jharkhand
(77,000), Jammu and Kashmir (31,000), Meghalaya (14,000),Mizoram
(6,000), Chhattisgarh (48,000), Odisha (40,000), Assam (16,000),
Tripura (10,000) Arunachal Pradesh (9,000).
Despite the implementation of Sarva Sishika Abhiyan (SSA), many
teaching posts are still vaccant. While the total number of sanctioned
posts under the SSA is 19, 82,894, the vacancies of teacher posts
under the SSA has been estimated at 6, 96,560.
As per the Union HRD Ministry records, there are 1,59,087 vacancies of
teacher posts in Uttar Pradesh, 2,05,378 in Bihar, 79,110 in Madhya
Pradesh and 61,623 in West Bengal under the SSA.
Many states are lagging behind in putting in place toilets and
drinking water facilities in schools. Tamil Nadu has 13,640 vacancies
of teaching posts, Andhra Pradesh 27,679, Karnataka 20,113 and Kerala
2,925.
